Welcome to EVCA

As did America’s Founding Fathers, the Estancia Valley Classical Academy believes that the preservation of liberty depends on an intelligent and moral citizenry. In order for Americans to secure the way of life we enjoy, our youth must know and understand the truths and principles that define Western Civilization and underlie the American Constitution.

EVCA was founded by a group of concerned community members who aim to counter the trend of academic mediocrity and cultural illiteracy in America. EVCA provides students the benefit of a content rich and academically rigorous classical liberal arts education with a strong civics component, without the price tag of a private school. At EVCA, students are challenged to excel both in academics and in moral discipline. Students learn reading, math, and science through time proven methods and learn a true account of history based in the reading of primary source documents. Furthermore, discipline, ethics, and personal responsibility are modeled and expected. EVCA’s aim is to develop the academic potential and personal character of each of its students, regardless of background, socio-economic status and ability, and to graduate them fully prepared to become intelligent, responsible, and active members of their community.

This is summed up in our mission statement: To preserve our nation’s Founding Principles, Estancia Valley Classical Academy seeks to furnish willing students a rigorous education in the arts, sciences, and humanities, with such instruction in the virtues as will best develop the mind and character of its pupils.

Classical Education

Estancia Valley Classical Academy has deliberately taken a classical approach to education. That is, we adhere to an ancient view of learning and traditional teaching methods. Such a choice might at first seem paradoxical. Why, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, in the age of the internet, in a country that has long been addicted to the revolutionary and the novel, should a forward-looking school root itself so deeply in the past? Is not newer always better? What can young people learn from old books? We must answer these questions clearly from the outset.

EVCA has embraced classical education for at least four reasons that separate it from modern, progressive education. Classical education:

  • values knowledge for its own sake;
  • upholds the standards of correctness, logic, beauty, and importance intrinsic to the liberal arts;
  • demands moral virtue of its adherents;
  • and prepares human beings to assume their places as responsible citizens in the political order.

Estancia Valley Classical Academy is a free, public charter school located in Moriarty, New Mexico. We are chartered to provide students with a challenging, classical education in the liberal arts and in the classic virtues. Here at EVCA, we are not distracted by the latest education fad, nor do we think the solution to today's educational crisis lies with technology. On the contrary, we believe the solution to our education's crisis is a strong educational foundation where students are challenged and rewarded for true personal accomplishment.

Estancia Valley Classical Academy is affiliated with Hillsdale College through the Barney Charter School Initiative.  In May, 2015, at our inaugural graduation ceremony, EVCA was awarded the Henry Salvatori prize for Excellence in Teaching, presented by Dr. Larry Arnn, President of Hillsdale College and our keynote speaker at that event.

EVCA does not "teach to the test". We focus on a rigorous liberal arts curriculum. If we are doing our job right, students should score quite well on standardized tests. And that's exactly what we see.  Click below to see part of our track record as a school.

EVCA is a public charter school. That means that we are free of charge, but also that students must apply to attend EVCA during one of our Open Enrollment Periods. New Mexico statutes permit charter schools to limit enrollment to particular class limits. If more students express interest in attend than the available seats, then an enrollment lottery will be held to determine those students who will be admitted. For more information, please see our enrollment page.
